4 Things to Consider in Renting a House

  1. The deposit is probably going to be more than an apartment

    Houses are significantly more expensive than apartment units, so it should come as no surprise that the deposit on your home is going to be higher. In some cases, the deposit might equal as much as your first month’s rent, both of which are typically paid upfront upon signing the lease. For this reason, it’s a good idea to have slightly more than double your first month’s rent saved up before you rent a home. That way, you should have enough to cover the deposit, rent, and fees associated with the application or background check.

  2. You’re in charge of the utilities

    Generally speaking, when you rent an apartment you come with your utilities already connected and ready to use. That’s not always the case when it comes to renting a home, however. You’ll be responsible for calling the various utility companies and making sure that your gas, water, and electricity are all turned on by the time you move in.

  3. Know what you’re responsible for

    First and foremost, read your lease. It will state what your duties as the tenant are, as well as what you can and cannot do with the home. Find out who you’re supposed to contact if there’s a problem with the house and whether it’s your responsibility to cover the cost of repairs. Generally speaking, you shouldn’t assume that you can make any changes to the home or yard without written consent from your landlord, so don’t go cutting down that tree or repainting the outside of the house just because you don’t like the way it looks.

  4. Keep your home in good condition

    This should go without saying, but make sure that your home is always in good condition. It’s not unheard of for the landlord to pop in from time to time to see whether their property is being taken care of. The last thing you want is for them to drop by when the house looks like it’s seen better days.
